Licenses and Access Rights

Ensuring the rights and terms and conditions for re-use is an important facet for an information discovery service. There are different types of content within the EDC and different licenses and access rights have been assigned to these by their creators and/or authors.

These licenses will inform you as to what you are allowed to do with the content and what acknowledgment you need to provide. This page gives an overview of the licensing provisions

Metadata within the Energy Data Centre

Metadata within the EDC uses the Open Government Licence (OGL). This allows for copying, publishing, distributing and transmiting the Information; adapting the Information; exploiting the Information commercially and non-commercially providing the EDC is attributed or the following sentence is used : Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Most details from the projects metadata comes from UKRI's Gateway to Research service and so itself is licensed under the OGL.

Research Data

Some of our datasets use CC-BY and OGL licenses. Others have specialised licenses or terms and conditions, which are detailed below.

Terms & conditions

The P114 data held in the UKERC Energy Data Centre is subject to a formal licence agreement signed by the Science and Technology Facilities Council and Elexon Ltd, which may be renewed annually.
The licence permits STFC to grant access rights to a nominated third party body, subject to prior approval by Elexon Ltd. As at 1 July 2016 the following Universities have signed a formal agreement and have been granted access rights.

Each nominated body is only allowed to use the data “for the purpose of participating in or in connection with electricity trading in Great Britain”.
Each nominated body has agreed that the data is disseminated within its organisation only on a “need to know basis”; that access will not be granted to any person who is not an employee or officer of the nominated body; and that persons within the organisation will ensure that the data is kept strictly confidential.
The Data is supplied as indicative data only, on an “as is” basis, and no guarantee is made as to its accuracy (please see the relevant metadata entry for the history of the Data)
The Data is supplied to the named applicant for academic research purposes only and should not be passed on to third parties (please make a separate application for all users who need access to the Data)
The Data may be used as the basis for academic publications (users are requested to acknowledge the source of the data in any such publication, recognising the UKERC Energy Data Centre and Elexon Ltd.)
The user may not re-publish the Data.

SSEN New Thames Valley Vision (NTVV) Data

The New Thames Valley Vision (NTVV) project data was collected between 2011 and 2017 through the £30M Ofgem funded Low Carbon Network project;
The Data is owned by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and is supplied by UKERC Energy Data Centre (please see the Thames Valley Vision website; http://www.thamesvalleyvision.co.uk/ for more information about the project, and the relevant metadata entry for the history of the Data);
Use of the data is subject to the following End-User Agreement and Disclaimer: You, (the End-User), are about to access certain data, (the Data) by continuing you acknowledge that the Data is presented here 'as is', without any commitment that it is complete, accurate of suitable for any specific use or purpose to which you may wish to put the same. The Data is provided under a Creative Commons licence. It is additionally subject to the End-User Agreement and Disclaimer listed below. We recommend and welcome collaborating on data analysis and publications due to the complex nature of the dataset and the availability of updated, augmented and improved data sets. ETI produced a different licence for each of their datasets which had the information about the project name and partners in the licence. The text below has the generic part of the licence and indicates where specific projects and their partners are entered in the licence for that specific project

Name of specific project - ETI Open Licence for Materials

The Energy Technologies Institute LLP (the ETI) is making this Document available for Use under the following conditions from the (named specific) Project. This is intended to make this Document available on a similar basis as under the Open Government Licence but it is not Crown Copyright and it is owned and licenced separately by the ETI.

ETI publications

ETI produced a series of licenses adapted to specific outputs. This is a generic version.
