Objectives
Abstract We propose the first facility in the UK for electron diffraction (ED). A significant fraction of structures - by some estimates (Palatinus, 2021) 10% of all crystalline compounds - are beyond solution by X-ray diffraction (XRD). New approaches and technology in ED now bring them within reach, particularly with the recent arrival of dedicated electron diffractometers. There is intense national and international interest in the new science that these machines enable. We will establish and develop this nascent technology, supporting a national effort by working with potential user communities to build activity, understand scientific coverage and establish demand. We propose a dual-centre approach, based on ED expertise and technique development at UoW, combined with UoS experience in providing the National Crystallography Service (NCS) NRF
