The Characterisation of Feedstocks project provides an understanding of UK produced 2nd generation energy biomass properties, how these vary and what causes this variability. In this project, several types of UK-grown biomass, produced under varying conditions, were sampled.  The biomass sampled included Miscanthus, Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) and Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) Willow.  The samples were tested to an agreed schedule in an accredited laboratory.  The results were analysed against the planting, growing, harvesting and storage conditions (i.e. the provenance) to understand what impacts different production and storage methods have on the biomass properties. The main outcome of this project is a better understanding of the key characteristics of UK biomass feedstocks (focusing on second generation) relevant in downstream energy conversion applications, and howthese characteristics vary by provenance.

This Excel Workbook presents the data arising from all experiments carried out under the Characterisation of Feedstocks Project. The data set includes: the sites sampled, the conditions at the time of sampling, provenance data, soil laboratory results and biomass laboratory results. The feedstock studies carried out to yield these data are shown in the “Workbook Details” sheet – this sheet also briefly describes the quality assurance process for the data. As a result of the breadth and depth of data provided in these tables, the ETI anticipates that these data will be useful to a range users including

• Academics whose research focuses on bioenergy crop production or use of bioenergy crops in pre-treatment or conversion technologies;
• Modellers seeking biomass physical property data
• Bioenergy project developers seeking to understand their design envelopes;
• Existing commercial biomass users seeking to understand process performance;
• Biomass buyers assessing risks and defining fuel specifications.

DUKES is an extensive collections of tables, charts and commentary with separate sections on coal, petroleum, gas, electricity, renewables and combined heat and power, providing a comprehensive picture of energy production and use over the last five years, with key series taken back to 1970. 2013 to date are online here, while older data is available at the National Archive. NB There is a pdf containing an useful index to the archived data. This is a series of PDF files, also available as printed booklets. The tables can be downloaded to Excel.

Phyllis is a database containing information on the composition of biomass and waste. From Phyllis you can obtain analysis data of individual biomass or waste materials or average values for a group of materials. Groups can be selected from one of three classification schemes: the ECN Phyllis scheme, the NTA 8003 scheme (only in Dutch), and the European standard CEN/TS 14961. The latter scheme is used for the BIODAT database, which has been made an integral part of Phyllis. The BIODAT database was developed in co-operation with European partners within the PHYDADES project. BIODAT is restricted to data from standard analysis methods. In 2012, BIODAT became a subset of Phyllis and the Phyllis website was adapted accordingly. In the future, the BIODAT subset will be the main growth area of the Phyllis database.

To complement its existing analysis of the bioenergy sector, the ETI wanted to find out more about current public opinion of bioenergy in the UK and the potential drivers behind those opinions. To do this the ETI developed a survey which was carried out by YouGov in 2015. An extended version of the survey was repeated in 2016.

This workbook contains the results of a survey on public perceptions of bioenergy carried out by YouGov for the ETI from 21st – 24th August 2015. The total sample size was 3,105 GB (Great Britain) adults and the figures in this document have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+). The survey found that there is strong public support for producing bioenergy in the UK from both biomass and waste, with 80% of respondents in favour of bioenergy playing a bigger part in the UK energy mix. Readers should note that any percentages calculated based on fewer than 50 respondents do not represent a wide enough cross-section of the target population to be considered statistically reliable. The questionnaire was developed by the ETI and reviewed by specialists in social science research.

The Renewable Energy Planning Database (REPD) and the Heat Networks Planning Database are updated and published every quarter. The Renewable Energy Planning Database tracks the progress of renewable electricity and heat networks projects. The Heat Networks Planning Database covers district as well as communal heat network projects. The Renewable Energy Planning Database tracks the progress of renewable electricity and heat networks projects. It provides as accurate and comprehensive a snapshot as possible of projects in both areas, and of progress across the technology sectors.The Heat Networks Planning Database covers district as well as communal heat network projects.It aims to provide a more complete picture of heat network deployment across the UK.
The databases are: updated during the month following the end of each quarter; and are provided in 2 separate CSV files, and on separate worksheets within a single XLSX file.

Local authority level residual fuel (ie non-gas, non-electricity, non-road transport) consumption statistics. This includes: the full dataset and a factsheet summarising the key points of the dataset. This residual fuels dataset is also sometimes known as other fuels consumption data.

The techno-economic project will provide a greater understanding of the options available to modify or improve the physical and chemical characteristics of different types of UK-derived 2nd generation energy biomass feedstocks, that may otherwise reduce the cost-effective performance of conversion technologies

This Excel tool presents techno-economic assessments of a library of representative biomass value chains producing heat, power, combined heat and power, or syngas. Costs are present day (projected future costs not considered), and prices or profits are not be considered. The tool does not consider uncertainty ranges, feedstock characteristics or sensitivity analyses. This Excel tool is a pre-cursor to the more sophisticated gPROMS model produced later in the project.

Note:

• This workbook is very large, and reliant on the interaction between thousands of different input parameters and formulae
• In particular, the “Chain choice” tab contains a Data table with over a large number of rows and 3 columns, which is computationally heavy, and often leads to cycling between chains/volatile values changing
• It is therefore a very strong recommendation for the user to configure your Excel to NOT automatically update all formulae
• To do this, go to File > Options > Formulas > and select “Automatic except for data tables”.
• You can then use the Excel safely, and if you want to refresh the Data table results, hit “F9” and wait about 2 minutes. The Data table will be refreshed when the “Data Table: 1” status at the bottom right of the Excel window disappears. If you hit “F9” then move to another cell or tab, the table will not have updated.
• Youmay also find that you cannot have any other spreadsheet open at the same time.

In its Insights report, “The Role For Bioenergy in Decarbonising the UK Energy System: Findings from the ETI Bioenergy Programme”, the ETI reviews its 10 year bioenergy programme and recommends an increase in biomass production and the creation of the right environment to advance bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) as a core component in a push to a low and net zero carbon UK. This Insights report is available for download from the ETI’s website.

This workbook prevents the full set of ESME results charts for the five scenarios examined in the main report:

1. Base Case
2. Reduced Biomass and biofuel feedstock availability
3. No CCS
4. No biomass gasification
5. No biomass gasification + no CSS

There are two worksheets for each scenario

• Core Charts - a single worksheet with key charts from each scenario, with aggregated categories for easier interpretation
• N. (Scenario) - Detail - All charts produced for the scenario, including a more detailed category breakdown

All scenarios were run using version 4.3 of ESME

Energy trends is a quarterly bulletin containing statistics on all major aspects of energy in the UK. Energy trends focuses on the supply and demand of coal, oil, gas, electricity and renewables in the United Kingdom. Data is published a quarter in arrears.
